![]() Overcast's web player is rudimentary at best, and it's not much use if you listen to podcasts that only have episodes available for a day or two (a lot of BBC podcasts, for example).Ī real podcatcher will have the episodes cached. I persist with Downcast because it's the only podcatcher with a Mac client. The "beta" they originally released was alpha/prototype quality. They just don't get fixed.ĭowncast for Mac is a few years old now and it's still only beta quality. If you move more than one episode, Downcast immediately forgets your changes.Īnd these issues persist for years. If you want to reorder downloads in the iOS app, you have to enter and exit edit mode for each episode. Within about a second, Downcast clears your selection and selects the first episode in the list instead. Try selecting a few episodes in a playlist in the Mac version while it's downloading episodes. VLC can play HD video and not load the CPU as heavily as Downcast playing an mp3. Somehow it contrives to consume 6x the CPU cycles that iTunes needs to play audio. A new dedicated download area lets you see all your downloaded podcasts in the order you downloaded them and gives you options to quickly clean these up as well. There’s a new filter option which lets you see only episodes that have come out in the last 24 hours, or a different time of your choosing. There’s MP3 chapter support (including images) for all your favourite podcasts that are starting to support those. There’s 3D Touch shortcuts for those of you with fancy new phones. There’s improvements to auto download, including a new waiting for WiFi state. Many things can now be accomplished faster than before and it just looks and works so much better. Instead of throwing that all out and starting again we’ve refined every part of it. It’s simple to understand, easy to use and it doesn’t hurt that it looks good as well. We’ve always been proud of the Pocket Casts User Interface. This gives us amazing performance and stability improvements over the old code base. The majority of the app has been re-written in Apple’s modern programming language, Swift. Some of the highlights of the new version: I've never been a fan of Overcast and although it's been installed on iPhone on few occasions, I've always gone back up Pocket Casts and after 2 years sans update, Pocket Casts is updated to v6.0.
